Dear Mr. King:
This responds to your letter requesting clarification of the segregation requirements for certain
explosives under the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 17 1 - 1 80).
Specifically, you ask whether an explosive item classed as a Division 1.4D may be
transported on the same transport vehicle as detonators.
The answer is yes. Except as otherwise specified, the provisions of 5 177.848(g)(3)(iv) apply
to detonators transported on the same transport vehicle with Division 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 material.
An explosive item classed as a Division 1.4D may be transported on the same transport
vehicle as a detonator.
I trust this satisfies your inquiry. Please contact us if we can be of further assistance.
Sincerely,
Hattie L. Mitchell
Chief, Regulatory Review and Reinvention

Dear SirlMadarn:
I have reviewed 177.848 and in the chart for explosives there is an X and a 4 when
comparing a D with a B. The 4 1 understand tells rne to review 177.835(g). In reading
this paragraph it is plain that detonators are not allowed to be transported with any 1 .I,
1.2, 1.3 or 1.5 unless the provisions of (g) (I), (2) or (3) are met.
As I understand, because there is no reference to 1.4 that items that are approved and
Classed as 1.4D may be transported with detonators. Is this correct?
Sincerely,
-
