Dear Mr. Porter
Your letter of September 11, 1970, to Mr. Caldwell has been referred to me for reply. You have correctly interpreted the
regulations, Part 195, 49 CFR does not apply to gas pipelines. The only Section that applies to the marking gas pipelines is
192.707.
Revisions of the gas pipeline requirements for marking of lines is under active consideration for future by the
Department of Transportation.
Thank you for your interest in the pipeline safety program-
Sincerely ,

Mr. Joseph Caldwell

Office of the Secretary of Transportation

Dear Mr. Caldwell:
I recently received the Federal Register, Volume 35 Number 161 Part II, "Department of Transportation Hazardous
Materials Regulations Board, Transportation of Natural and other Gas by Pipeline, Minimum Safety Standards" and
have reviewed this and only find one place which mentions the marking of gas pipelines namely 192.707
"Transmissions lines: Markers."
We manufacture signs for the pipeline, power line, and communications industry.
We have had inquiries from individuals within the gas pipeline industry as to whether or not the Department of
Transportation regulations governing the marking of crude oil and petroleum pipelines is applicable to gas
transmission lines.
I'm wondering if there is something else relating to marking or if section 195.410 entitled "Line Markers" from
Title 49, Transportation, Chapter I, Part 180 and Part 195 of the Department of Transportation, Hazardous
Materials Regulations Board covers also the marking of gas pipelines.
If there is any information you can furnish me on this subject, I will appreciate hearing from you.
With kindest personal regards.
Cordially,
WILLIAM V. BUD PORTER
President
