Operators should consider factors that influence the formation of internal corrosion, including gas quality and operating parameters. Operators should give special attention to pipeline alignment features that may contribute to internal corrosion by allowing condensates to settle out of the gas stream. This action follows a review of incidents involving internal corrosion, some of which resulted in loss of life, injuries, and significant property damage. OPS’ preliminary investigation of a recent gas transmission pipeline incident found wall thinning on damaged pipe associated with the incident. Background\nInternal corrosion control in gas\ntransmission pipelines is addressed in\nthe federal pipeline safety regulations at\n49 CFR 192.475 and 192.477. Internal\ncorrosion is most often found in gas\ntransmission pipelines and\nappurtenances in the vicinity of\nproduction and gathering facilities or\nstorage fields.\nAn OPS review of incident reports\nand inspections indicated that better\nindustry guidance is needed to\ndetermine the best practices for\nmonitoring the potential for internal\ncorrosion in gas transmission pipelines.\nSome methods for monitoring internal\ncorrosion are weight loss coupons,\nradiography, water chemistry tests, in-\nline inspection tools, and electrical,\ngalvanic, resistance and hydrogen\nprobes. Operators should refer to\navailable recommended practices\nprovided by national consensus\nstandards organizations, such as the\nAmerican Petroleum Institute, National\nAssociation of Corrosion Engineers, and\nGas Piping Technology Committee\n(GPTC) for guidance in addressing\ninternal corrosion issues.\nOPS has worked with GPTC to revise\nthe Guide for Gas Transmission and\nDistribution Piping Systems (Guide) to\nbetter address the control of internal\ncorrosion. GPTC is considering\nmodifying the Guide to address design\nconsiderations, corrective measures, and\ndetection techniques for internal\ncorrosion.\nII. Advisory Bulletin (ADB–00–02)\nTo: Owners and Operators of Gas\nTransmission Pipelines.\nSubject: Internal Corrosion in Gas\nTransmission Pipelines.\nPurpose: To advise owners and\noperators of natural gas transmission\npipelines of the need to review their\ninternal corrosion monitoring programs\nand operations.\nAdvisory: Owners and operators of\nnatural gas transmission pipelines\nshould review their internal corrosion\nmonitoring programs and consider\nfactors that influence the formation of\ninternal corrosion, including gas quality\nand operating parameters. Some methods for monitoring\ninternal corrosion are weight loss\ncoupons, radiography, water chemistry\ntests, in-line inspection tools, and\nelectrical, galvanic, resistance and\nhydrogen probes.\n• Special attention should be given to\nspecific conditions, including flow\ncharacteristics, pipeline location\n(especially drips, deadlegs, and sags,\nwhich are on-line segments that are not\ncleaned by pigging or other methods,\nfittings and/or ‘‘stabbed’’ connections\nwhich could affect gas flow, operating\ntemperature and pressure, water\ncontent, carbon dioxide and hydrogen\nsulfide content, carbon dioxide partial\npressure, presence of oxygen and/or\nbacteria, and sediment deposits.\n• Review conditions in pipeline\nsegments downstream of gas production\nand storage fields.\n• Review conditions in pipeline\nsegments with low spots, sharp bends,\nsudden diameter changes, and fittings\nthat restrict flow or velocity.
