You\nasked whether a countrywide pager number meets the requirements for the emergency response\ntelephone number.\nThe answer is no. As required by § 172.604, the emergency response telephone number must be\nonitored at all times the hazardous material is in transportation by a person who is eith\nhowledgeable of the characteristics of the hazardous material and has comprehensiv\nemergency response information, or has immediate access to a person who possesses such\nknowledge. Services that require a \"call back\" (e.g., answering service, answering machine or\npagers) are not acceptable and are not in compliance with the requirements in § 172.604.\nI hope this satisfies your request.\nSincerely,\nHattie L. Mazzullo, Director\nWe need your assistance with the hazardous materials regulations.\nWe sell a variety of chemical and ceramic materials to the dental\nlaboratory in small bottles. Most of the materials are non-hazardous but\na few do meet the Packing Group II definition. In the interest in\nproviding right-to-know data for our customers, we provide Safety Data\nSheets on the materials.\nThe sheets bear our company name and\naddress.\nWe also provide an emergency telephone number, in the\nfollowing fashion. During normal business hours, the phone number\ngiven will contact a knowledgeable person in our office. After hours,\nweekends and holidays a number is given that pages (countrywide) a\ndegreed chemist who is knowledgeable about all the products. Due to\nour size as a company and the number of products, this approach is\nsatisfactory to our customers and we feel provides the necessary\nprotection and emergency contact.\nDOT regulations in the most cost-effective manner for us.
