Box 246\nGaffney, SC\n29341-0246\nDear Mr. Howell:\nThis is in response to your letter dated January 10, 2001,\nconcerning hazardous material shipping paper requirements under\nthe Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180).\nYour questions are paraphrased\nand answered as follows:\nQ1.\nMay a \"#\" sign be used as a unit of measure to indicate •\nweight on a shipping paper (i.e., pounds)?\nAl. Yes.\nSection 172.202 (a) (5) does not prohibit the use of\na \"#\" sign as a unit of measurement.\nQ2. May a shipping paper contain more than one emergency\nresponse telephone number?\nA2. Yes. However, when more than one emergency response\ntelephone number is entered on a shipping paper, each must\nmeet the requirements under\n172.604 (a) and (b).
