Specifically you ask whether sodium borohydride or potassium borohydride may be packed\nin a glass bottle then placed in a plastic bag that is hermetically sealed, then placed inside a metal can\nwithout regard to special provision N40.\nthat is hermetically sealed, then placed in a strong outside container as specified in DOT E-9168,\nThe answer is yes. Special provision N40 prohibits sodium borohydride or potassium borohydride\nfrom being transported in a combination packaging consisting of a 4G fiberboard box with inner\nreceptacles that are glass. It does not prohibit packaging such as authorized under DOT E-9168\nconsisting of a combination inner packaging (i.e., glass receptacle in a metal can) inside a strong outside\ncontainer (i.e., fiberboard box).\nI hope this information is helpful.\nSincerely,\nmess\nTransportation Regulations Specialist\nOffice of Hazardous Materials Standards\n010113\n172.102\n\n<<<PAGE 2>>>\n\nLaValle\n$172.102 (N40)\n2000 Park Lane Drive\n• Fisher Scientific Company L.L.C.\nPittsburgh, PA 15275-1126\nFisher Scientific\nNow Bulk fackaging 1: 412108300\nMay 1, 2001\n01-0113\nwww.fis\nsci.com.\nU.S. Department of Transportation\nResearch & Special Programs Administration\nATTN: Mr. Ed Mazzullo\nOffice of Hazardous Materials Safety\n400 Seventh Street S.W.\nWashington, D.C. 20590\nRE: Request for Interpretation 49 CFR 172.102 Special Provision N40\nDear Mr. Mazzullo:\nFisher Scientific Co.
