No. 02-0145\nHazmat Environmental Group, Inc.\nNew Village Industrial Park\n50 Commerce Drive\nBuffalo, New York 14218-1040\nDear Ms. Orth:\nThis responds to your March 8, 2002 letters requesting clarification on § 172.203 (a) under the\nHazardous Materials Regulations (FMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180). Specifically, you ask if a generic\nshipping description with a subsidiary hazard of Class 8 or Division 4.2 is required to have the\nexemption number, e.g., DOT-E 11153, written in association with the basic description. In addition,\nyou ask if the exemption number, e.g., DOT-E 9723 and DOT-E 10441, is required to be written in\nassociation with the basic shipping description.\nThese three exemptions provide no relief from the HMR other than as specifically stated in the\nexemption. Therefore, the exemption number is required to be written on the shipping paper in\nassociation with the basic shipping description in accordance with § 172.203(a).\nI hope this answers your inquiry.\nSincerely,\nSubm Ballo\nDelmer F.
