Specifically, you ask whether your company, which produces corrugated\nboxes, an approval agency certifying compliance (e.g., third party testing facility), or a\ncustomer is required to have a symbol or \"M\" number.\nIf your company does not accept responsibility for certifying a packaging and provides\npackagings to your customer who does accept responsibility for certifying the packaging,\nyour company does not need an \"M\" number.\nI hope this answers your inquiry.\nSincerely\nChief, Standards Development\nOffice of Hazardous Materials Standards\n178.3\n178.503\n040170\n\n<<<PAGE 2>>>\n\nBoothe\n7.-\n$118.3\n$178.503\nPCA\nMarking of lacksgings\nJuly 13, 2004\nPACKAGING CORPORATION OF AMERICA\n04-0170\nMr. Ed Mazzullo\nDirector, Office of Hazardous Materials Standard\nU.S. DOT/RSPA (DHM-10)\n400 7* Street SW\nWashington, DC 20590-001\nDear Mr. Mazzullo:\nI need to know the proper use of M numbers. If our customer is the Certifier of Record,\ncertify the packages. It is done by third party labs. Should this third party lab have an M\nshould they have an M number? We are never considered the \"Manufacturer\" would we\nneed an M number?\nYou may e-mail me at mgilgenbach@packagingcorp.com of fax a response to 847-482-\n2100.\nThank you for your help.\nSincerely,\nMichael Gigentach\nMichael Gilgenbach\nTechnical and Development Center • 250 South Shaddle Avenue • Mundelein, Illinois 60060 • Tel (847) 482-3000","truncated":false,"body_characters":2126}
