Box 160\nAthens, TN 37371-0160\nDear Mr. Calonge:\nThis is in\nclarification of the requirements\nresponse to your May 10, 2005 letter requesting\nfor accident damage\nprotection for DOT 406 cargo tank motor vehicles under the\nHazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180) .\nSpecifically you ask if you may construct recesses within the\nshell of the cargo tank for service equipment (such as valves,\nfittings, and manholes) .\nThe answer is yes.\nIn your letter and attached drawings you\ndescribe and depict recesses at the top of the cargo tank,\nshell of the tank.\nwhich prevent the, service equipment from protruding beyond the\nare not subject to accident damage protection (see\n§ 178.345-8). However, the recesses are part of the cargo\ntank and must be constructed in accordance with all applicable\nrequirements in Part 178, Subpart J.\nI hope this information is helpful.
