Your questions are\nparaphrased and answered as follows:\nQ1. Are hazardous materials in limited quantities excepted\nfrom segregation within a freight container under\n§ 176.80 (b) and from the container segregation\nrequirements in § 176.83 (f)?\nAl. Yes.\nSection 176.80 (b) specifically states \"Hazardous\nmaterials in limited quantities when loaded in transport\nvehicles and freight containers are excepted from the\nsegregation requirements of this subpart and any\nadditional segregation specified in this subchapter for\ntransportation by vessel.\" Different packages of two\nhazardous materials that normally require segregation\nfrom one another may be stowed together in the same\nfreight container when either or both of the materials\nare packaged only as limited quantities. With respect to\nand only a tated.\nsegregation between freight containers, no segregation\nneed be applied between a freight container loaded only\nwith materials packaged as limited quantities and other\ncontainers whether or not the hazardous materials in\nthose other containers are packaged as limited\nquantities.\n174.80\n17683\n050161\n\n<<<PAGE 2>>>\n\n22. Under § 176.80 (b), are hazardous materials in limited\nquantities excepted from stowage requirements specified\nin Subparts G through 0 of Part 176?\nA2. As discussed in Al, stowage requirements that specify\nsegregation between hazardous materials do not apply to\nlimited quantities transported by vessel; however,\nstowage requirements other than those that specify\nsegregation of hazardous materials are applicable to\nuse of the IMDG Code in place of the provisions in the\nlimited quantities.\nPlease also note, that the HMR allow\nHMR subject to the conditions and limitations in\n§ 171.12 (b). With respect to stowage provisions for\nlimited quantities, paragraph 3.4.3 of the IMDG Code\nallows the use of stowage Category A for hazardous\nmaterials transported as limited quantities regardless of\nthe stowage category assigned for the material in column\n(16) of the Dangerous Goods List in Chapter 3.2 of the\nIMDG Code.\nI hope this information is helpful. If you have further\nquestions, please do not hesitate to contact this office.\nSincerely,\nHattie b.
