No. 05-0180\nP.O. Box 20067\nCheyenne, WY 82003\nDear Mr. Anderson:\nThis responds to your July 7, 2005 email requesting clarification on shipping paper\ndescriptions under the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180).\nSpecifically, you ask if it is permissible to split the proper shipping description between\ntwo pages of the shipping paper.\nSection 172.202(b) of the HMR requires the basic shipping description to be shown in\nsequence with no additional information interspersed. The basic shipping description\nmust be easily recognizable and available to emergency responders in the event of an\nincident. Section 172.201(c) permits information to be carried over to additional pages of\na shipping paper. Thus, depending on the format used, it may be permissible for a\nshipping description to be split between two pages of the shipping paper. However, the\nexample you provided does not conform to the requirements in § 172.202(b) because the\nadditional information included on your shipping paper makes it difficult to identify the\ncomplete shipping description.\nI hope this answers your inquiry.\n172 202\n050180\n\n<<<PAGE 2>>>\n\nBoothe\n3/12. 208\nMitchell, Hattie <PHMSA>\nShipping Papers\nFrom:\nSent:\nJohn Anderson (SAFECOR) [John.Anderson@Airgas.com]\nTo:\nThursday, July 07, 2005 6:36 PM\n05-0180\nSubject:\nMitchell, Hattie <PHMSA>\nRequest for clarification on hazardous material shipping paper\nno 0295.
