Cooley, MSTC\nRef. No. 05-02:03\nEnd of State RT 238\nU.S. Coast Guard\nYorktown, VA 23690-5000\nDear Mr. Cooley:\nThis responds to your August 26, 2005 memorandum requesting clarification on the\ndefinition of \"fore and aft\" and \"athwarthips\" regarding section § 176.83(f)(4) of the\nHazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180). Specifically, you\nrequest the definition of these terms in the context of general container segregation under\n§ 176.83(f) (4).\n\"Fore and aft\" and \"athwartships\" are common nautical terms. In the context of 49 CFR\n176.83(f)(4), \"fore and aff\" means a container space of not less than 6 m (20 feet) long or\n\"athwartships\" means a container space of not less than 2.5 m (8 feet) wide when the\ncontainer is in parallel (bow to stern) with the keel.\nIn the context of the diagram (\"separated from\". 2 from chapter 7.2 of the International\nMaritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code) that accompanied your memo, \"fore and aft\"\nmeans one container space in the direction parallel with the keel (bow to stern) and\n\"athwartships\" means one container space perpendicular to the keel (port to starboard)\nwhen the container is aligned in parallel to the keel. Two closed incompatible containers\nare permitted to be segregated by one bay and two rows, as described in your memo,\nbecause the containers are one container space, 2.5 m (8 feet) apart in the athwartships\n(port to starboard) direction.\nI hope this answers your inquiry.\nSincerel\n18S4\nChief, Standards Development\nOffice of Hazardous Materials\n171.8\n176-83 (8)(4)\n050203\n\n<<<PAGE 2>>>\n\n83/ 6/2005 09:38\n757-856-2494\nMARINE SAFETY BRANCH\nPAGE 02/03\nHomeland Security\nU.S. Department of\nnited State\noast Guard\nBoth anna comer\nForkot sna VAR 21590-5000\nPhone: 757-656-2290 × 2\n{171.8\nFax:\nEmail: patricia. a cooley@uscg.mil\n316.83(f)4)\n3p Aug 2005\n16616\nMEMORANDUM\nSegregation/Detinitions\n05-0203\nFrom:\nAttin of:\nReply to\nP.
