Specifically, you inquired about the proper placement of italicized words within a\nshipping description.\nItalicized information may be utilized in addition to the proper shipping name\n(§172.101(c)(2)). The overall orientation of additional information is optional; however,\nthe preferred sequence for the proper shipping name is established by the Hazardous\nMaterial Table (HMT) (§ 172.101(c)(4))). In the example you provide, a shipper is\npreparing adhesives for transportation and includes italicized information on the shipping\npaper. In that case both \"Adhesives, containing a flammable liquid, 3, UN 1133, PG I\"\nor \"Adhesives, 3, UN 1133, PG I, containing a flammable liquid\" are acceptable proper\nshipping descriptions. The first description utilizes the sequence found in the HMT and\nis preferred.\nI hope this satisfies your request.\nSincerely,\nChief, Standards Development\nOffice of Hazardous Materials Standards\n171.8\n172, 101(c)\n050277\n\n<<<PAGE 2>>>\n\n-ONT\nBAH\nENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES\n§ 171,8\nOctober 24, 2005\n$172,101 (J\nMr. Edward Mazzullo, Director\nShipping Name\n05-02.77\nDear Sir,\nI am writing this letter to obtain an interpretation that describes the proper placement of italicized\nitalics are not part of the proper shipping name, but may be used in addition to the proper shipping\nwords within a shipping description.
