Webb\nReference No. 06-0022\nU.S. Coast Guard CITAT\n6500 South Macarthur Boulevard\nOklahoma City, OK 73169\nDear Mr. Webb:\nThis is in response to your request for a clarification of the marking requirements for\nQ1.\nIs the marking the International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG) requires\nnumber for the material in a white square-on-point diamond, unless excepted under\nfor limited quantity shipments under Section 3.4.5.1.2, i.e., the UN identification\nSection 3.4.7, the same as that required for limited quantity shipments under\n§ 172.315 of the HMR?\nAl.\nYes. As specified in § 172.315, except for transportation by aircraft, marking the\nackage with the identification number inside a white square-on-poin\nonfiguration identifies the material as a limited quantity and fulfills th\nrequirements of § 172.301(a)(1). If a shipper uses this method to identify packages\nshipping name, technical name, hazardous substance name(s) or \"RQ\" on the outer\ncontaining limited quantities, the shipper is not required to mark the proper\npackage.\nQ2.\nIf the shipper marks the package with the proper shipping name and UN\nidentification within the white square-on-point diamond?\nidentification number, is the shipper also required to mark the package with the UN\n172.315\n060022\n\n<<<PAGE 2>>>\n\nA2.\nNo. If a shipper does not use the UN identification within the \"white square-on-\nwith marking requirements for non-bulk packages prescribed in § 172.301, and\npoint diamond\" exception, the outer package for a limited quantity must comply\nother applicable requirements in 49 CFR Part 172, Subpart D, for the hazard\nclasses) contained within the package.\nI hope this information is helpful.\nSincerely,\nHattie L.
