No. 07-0196\nDear Mr. Pelsor:\nThis is in response to your e-mail asking whether the\nabbreviation \"TT\" is acceptable under the Hazardous\nMaterials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180) for\nrepresenting a cargo tank when indicating the packaging\ntype on shipping papers. You point out that the U.S.\nEnvironmental Protection Agency (EPA) authorizes the\nabbreviation for hazardous waste manifests. In a follow-up\ntelephone conversation with a member of my staff you asked\nwhether \"TT\" would be an acceptable abbreviation on\nshipping papers for hazardous materials that do not require\na hazardous waste manifest.\nThe answer is yes. The abbreviation \"TT\" is a commonly\naccepted and recognizable abbreviation for cargo tanks\n(tank trucks) and, thus, may be used to indicate a\nshipment's packaging type on shipping papers in accordance\nwith 5 '172.202 (a)'(6) of the HMR.\nI hope this information is helpful.
