Van Buren Street\nChicago, IL 60706\nRef. No.: 07-02 1 1\nDear Mr. Connolly:\nThis responds to your October 29,2007, letter regarding the description of hazardous\nmaterials on shipping papers required under the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49\nCFR Parts 171 -1 80). Specifically, you request clarification on the following abbreviations\nused to describe the type of package on a shipping paper: (1) \"T/T\" or \"TT\" to describe a\ncargo tank or a tank truck, and (2) \"ISOTANK\" to describe an intermodal portable tank?\nSection 172.202(a)(7) requires the number and type of packages to be indicated on a shipping\npaper. The type of packages must be indicated by description of the package (e.g., \"drum\") or\nabbreviation (e.g. \"cyl\" for \"cylinder\"). The abbreviations you provide are commonly\naccepted and recognizable and thus, may be used to indicate packaging type.\nI hope this answers your inquiry.\nSincerely,\n/ Chief, Standards Development\nOffice of Hazardous Materials Standards\n\n<<<PAGE 2>>>\n\nAKHB NOBEL\nOctober 29, 2007\nMr. John Gale\nOffice of Hazardous Materials Standards (PHH-10)\nOffice of Hazardous Materials Safety\nPipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration\nU.S. Department of Transportation\nEast Building, 2nd Floor\n1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE\nWashington, DC 20590-0001\nSubject: for\nHM-215 E Use of Commonly Acceptable Recognizable Abbreviations\nCertain Bulk Packages in Accordance with 49CFR172.202 (a) (7)\nDear Mr. Gale:\nAkzo Nobel Chemicals strives to meet the requirements for description of the type of\npackage on the shipping paper. They are in\nagreement that this is a common recognizable abbreviation for the package type\nportable tank.\nYour clarification is appreciated.\nRegards,\nManager, Transportation Regulations and Security\nTel# 3 12 544-7 177\nFax# 3 12 544-7087\nEmail mark.connollv@,akzonobel.com\nAkzo Nobel Chemicals Inc. 525 W Van Buren Street Chicago IL 60706","truncated":false,"body_characters":2925}
