No.: 08-02 16\nDear Mr. Gibson:\nThis responds to your letter dated August 20,2008, regarding the segregation requirements\nof the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR: 49 CFR Parts 17 1 - 1 80). Specifically, you\nask if § 177.848(c) applies to the transport of \"Hydrochloric Acid, 8, UN 1789, PG 11\", and\nan unregulated material (i.e., Ferric Ferro cyanide) that can produce hydrogen cyanide when\nit comes into contact with acids.\nParagraph (c) of 9 177.848 prohibits cyanides and cyanide mixtures or solutions to be stored,\nloaded or transported in the same transport vehicle with \"acids\" if a mixture of the materials\nwould generate hydrogen cyanide. Further, Division 4.2 materials may not be stored, loaded\nand transported with Class 8 (Corrosive) liquids. This requirement does not address cyanides\nand cyanide mixtures or solutions transported on the same transport vehicle with unregulated\nmaterials. However, 9 173.2 l(e) of the HMR prohibits a material in the same packaging,\nfreight container, or overpack with another material, the mixing of which is likely to cause a\ndangerous evolution of heat, or flammable or poisonous gases or vapors or to produce\ncorrosive materials. Therefore, the transport of \"Hydrochloric Acid, 8, UN 1789, PG 11\" and\nan unregulated material (i.e., Ferric Ferro cyanide) that can produce hydrogen cyanide gases\nor vapors when it comes into contact with acids is forbidden.\nI hope this information is helpful. If we can be of further assistance, please contact us.\nSincerely,\n1.\n' Susan Gorsky\nActing Chief, Standards Development\nOffice of Hazardous Materials Standards\n\n<<<PAGE 2>>>\n\nAug. 20, 2 0 0 8 8 : 5 3 A M Hawkins, I n c .
