In your email, you cite the valve pressure capability requirements under § 173.40(c)(1)\nas an example of valve integrity for cylinders used in toxic-by-inhalation service. Specifically,\nyou ask whether the valve of a Department of Transportation (DOT) Specification 4B cylinder\nmust meet either the minimum service pressure or test pressure requirements of the HMR.\nYou are correct in your citation that for cylinders in toxic-by-inhalation service \"each plug or\nvalve must...be capable of withstanding the test pressure of the cylinder without damage or\nleakage\" as stated in § 173.40(c)(1). The HMR do not include a similar requirement (such as\nvalve pressure ratings) for cylinders not in toxic-by-inhalation service; however, there are valve\nrequirements provided in the general requirements for cylinders (see § 173.301). For DOT\nSpecification 4B cylinders, § 178.50(h) specifies the thread requirements, including engaged\nthreads and shear strength.\nI hope this information is helpful. Please contact us if we can be of further assistance.\nSincerely,\nTHere ter.\nT. It seems common sense that any valves attached to such a cylinder would also require the same minimum rating\n(\"at least 150 psig\"), but I've been unable to find that requirement stated explicitly anywhere. Can you confirm that any\nattached valves need to meet the 150 psig minimum service pressure?\nI do see that for 6.1 Hazard Zone A materials (toxics, basically), CFR 173.40 (c) (1) states that \"each plug or valve...be\ncapable of withstanding the test pressure of the cylinder without damage or leakage.\" This reference to cylinder test\npressure (as opposed to service pressure) seems to set a relatively high standard for the attached valves, suggesting that\nthey would have to withstand 3x or more of the actual cylinder service pressure. Is that correct, or was the intent to\nspecify service pressure in this case?\nThank you,\nCameron Banks\nCameron Banks\nAccount Manager\nSwagelok Northern California\nSwagelok\n510.933.2500 office\n3393 West Warren Avenue\n510.933.6239 desk\nFremont, CA 94538\n408-806-9820 cell\n1\n\n<<<PAGE 3>>>\n\nCheck out our refreshed website.
