No.: 98-0281\nQuimoy, Iowa 51049\nDear Mr. Meyer:\nThis responds to your letter of September 8, 1998, concerning\ncargo tank requirements under the Hazardous\n(HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180).\nYou ask whether a system that\nMaterials Regulations\ndetects shear or separation within the vehicle pumping system and\nautomatically shuts the\nsatisfies the requirement in S\ninternal self-closing stop valve\n178.337-11 (a) (1) (i).\nThe answer to your question is \"yes.\" The specification\nrequirements for emergency discharge control can be achieved by\nmeans of either an internal self-closing stop valve or an excess\nSystem\" will automatically close the internal self-closing stop\n(see § 178.337-8 (a) (2)).
