No. 98-0330\nMainstream Engineering Corp.\nPines Industrial Center\n200 Yellow Place\nRockledge, FL 32955\nDear Mr. Grzyll:\nThis is in response to your letter dated October 27, 1998,\nregarding marking and labeling requirements for overpacks\nunder the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts\n171-180). In your letter you stated that you are shipping one\nhazardous material under the small quantity exception provided\nin S 173.4 and another hazardous material under: the terms of\nexemption DOI-E-10232. Specifically you ask if it is\npermissible to overpack these packages together and if so what\nmarkings and labels are required on overpacks. : ..\nAuthorized packages containing hazardous materials may be\noffered for transportation in an overpack, if all the\nconditions in $ 173.25 are met. An overpack, as defined in\n§ 171.8, is an enclosure used by a single consignor to provide\nprotection or convenience in handling of a package or to\nconsolidate two or more packages (i.e., a protective outer\npackaging such as a box or crate, or\nsecured to a pallet by\nshrinkwrapping, strapping, etc.).\nEach inner package must be marked and labeled in accordance\nwith the HMR.\nIn addition, each overpack must be marked with\nthe proper shipping name and identification number, and\nlabeled for each hazardous material it contains.\nThe overpack\nust also be marked with a statement indicating that insid\ninner) packages comply with prescribed specifications whe\nspecification packagings are required, unless the\nspecification markings on the inside packagings are visible.\n173.25\n\n<<<PAGE 2>>>\n\n:\nHowever, an overpack is not required to be marked with the\nproper shipping name and identification number, or labeled for\nany hazardous material packaged in accordance with § 173.4.\nI hope this satisfies your request.\nSincerely,\noohn A.
