Box 38\n33565 Pin Oak Parkway\nAvon Lake, OH 44012-0038\nDear Mr. Varga:\nThis is in response to your letter dated March 5, 1999,\nconcerning the definition of\n\"non-DOT specification portable\ntanks suitable for the transport of liquids.\"\nWhen the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts\n171-180) authorize a \"non-DOT specification portable tank\nsuitable for the transport of liquids\" any portable tank, as\ndefined in S 171.8, may be used for the transportation of\nliquids or solids as long as the portable tank meets the\ngeneral packaging requirements in SS 173.24 and 173.24b. \" If\nthe HMR authorize its use, no exemption is required to use a\nnon-DOT specification portable tank.
