You describe the mixture as\n\"Compressed gas, n.o.s., 2.2, UN1956\" and supply a material\nsafety data sheet (MSDS) which includes ratios of the various\ngases which make up the mixture. You ask for guidance in\ndetermining which components in the mixture would be listed as\ntechnical names.\nSection 172.203 (k) (2) requires the technical names of at least\ntwo components most predominately contributing to the hazards\nof a mixture or solution which contains two or more hazardous\nmaterials be included in the shipping description. In your\nscenario, the MSDS which you included lists oxygen and\nnitrogen as the two main components of the mixture. While the\nmixture also contains small amounts of hydrogen sulfide and\ncarbon monoxide, which are both Division 2.3 materials, the\nmixture is classified as a Division 2.2 material. The\ntechnical names must identify the components which\npredominately contribute to the hazards the material exhibits,\nwhich was have determined to be Division 2.2. Please review the attached MSDS and provide me with a letter of\ninterpretation to determine the appropriate broper shipping name.\nThe shipper has Classified the gas mixture as UN 1956, Compressed gas n.o.s.\n(Hydrogen sulfide, Carbon monoxide), Class and Division 2.2.
