No: 99-0262\n• Level Propane\nRootstown Office\nPost Office Box 226\nRootstown, OH 44272\nDear Ms. Ahrens:\nThis is in response to your letter dated October 26, 1999,\nand subsequent phone conversations with Mr. Michael\nJohnsen of my staff concerning placarding requirements for\nyour propane storage tanks under the Hazardous Materials\nRegulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180) •\nPropane storage tanks must be placarded on each side and\neach end as required in § 172.514.\nHowever, § 172.514 (c)\nprovides an exception which allows labeling instead of\nplacarding for certain portable tanks, DOT 106 and 110\nmulti-unit tank cars, IBCs and bulk packagings with a\nvolumetric capacity of less than 18 cubic meters (640 cubic\nfeet).
