Howard Street\nBaltimore, MD\n21201\nDear Mr. Steinhoff:\n•This is in response to your letter dated November 2, 1999,\nHazardous Materials Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR Parts 171-180).\nregarding the proper shipping description for gas oil under the\nSpecifically, you asked which of the following are\nproper\nshipping descriptions for gas oil:\n(1) Gas oil, 3, UN1202, III\n(2) Gas oil, Combustible liquid, UN1202, III\n(3) Gas oil, 3, Combustible liquid, UN1202, III\n(4) Combustible liquid, n.o.s., (Gas oil), UN1202, III\nDescription (1) is correct. The proper shipping description for\ngas oil specified in the Hazardous Materials Table (HMT;\n$ 172.101) is \"Gas oil, 3, UN1202, PG III.\" Description (2) is\nappropriate if the gas oil is reclassed as a combustible liquid\nin accordance with § 173.150 (f) •\nWhen a material is reclassed in\naccordance with $ 173.150 (f), each reference to Class 3 is\nmodified to read \"Combustible liquid\" (§ 172.101 (d) (4)) .\nDescription (3) is incorrect. Two hazard classes have been\nidentified; Hazard class 3 (Flammable liquid) and Combustible •\nliquid.\nsubsidiary class name, subsidiary class or division number\nWhile $ 172.202(a)(2)\nallows shippers to enter a\nfollowing the numerical hazard\n. class, combustible liquid can not\nbe a subsidiary of a flammable liquid.\nDescription\n(4) is also\n172.101 (g)\n990305\n\n<<<PAGE 2>>>\n\nincorrect.\nSection 172.101 (d) (4) allows the hazard class to be\nmodified from \"3\" to \"Combustible liquid,\" but does not authorize\nmodification of the proper shipping name.\nIn addition, UN1202 is\nnot the correct identification number for the proper shipping\nname \"Combustible liquid, n.o.s.\"\nI hope this satisfies your request.\nSincerely,\nTransportation Regulations Specialist\nOffice of Hazardous Materials Standards\n\n<<<PAGE 3>>>\n\nBAH\nU.S. DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION\n$172.101 G)\n1O S.
