You have correctly interpreted the\nregulations, Part 195, 49 CFR does not apply to gas pipelines. Kuh\nChief, Regulations Division\nOffice of Pipeline Safety\n\n<<<PAGE 2>>>\n\nThe Porter Company\nNew Braunfels, Texas 78130\nSeptember 11, 1970\nMr. Joseph Caldwell\nDeputy Director\nOffice of Pipeline Safety\nOffice of the Secretary of Transportation\nWashington, D.C. 20590\nDear Mr. Caldwell:\nI recently received the Federal Register, Volume 35 Number 161 Part II, \"Department of Transportation Hazardous\nMaterials Regulations Board, Transportation of Natural and other Gas by Pipeline, Minimum Safety Standards\" and\nhave reviewed this and only find one place which mentions the marking of gas pipelines namely 192.707\n\"Transmissions lines: Markers.\"\nWe manufacture signs for the pipeline, power line, and communications industry.\nWe have had inquiries from individuals within the gas pipeline industry as to whether or not the Department of\nTransportation regulations governing the marking of crude oil and petroleum pipelines is applicable to gas\ntransmission lines.\nI'm wondering if there is something else relating to marking or if section 195.410 entitled \"Line Markers\" from\nTitle 49, Transportation, Chapter I, Part 180 and Part 195 of the Department of Transportation, Hazardous\nMaterials Regulations Board covers also the marking of gas pipelines.\nIf there is any information you can furnish me on this subject, I will appreciate hearing from you.\nWith kindest personal regards.\nCordially,\nWILLIAM V.
