J. Hendrickson, Director\nPipeline Safety Division\nIndiana Public Service Commission\n901 State Office Building\nIndianapolis, Indiana 46204\nDear Mr. Hendrickson:\nThis is in answer to our inquiry dated November 15,1971, where you ask us to advise you which of the referenced\nstandards listed in Appendix A, Part 192, Apply to (1) the design of pipe threads and (2) malleable iron pipe fittings.\nIn answer to your questions, first the design of pipe threads is covered by ASTM A-53”standard Specifications for\nWelded and Seamless Steel Pipe.” Secondly, there are no specifications for malleable iron pipe fittings listed in Part 192,\njust as there were none listed in B31.8. Malleable iron pipe fittings, therefore, would be under §192.143 General\nRequirements, that reads as follows:\nEach component of a pipeline must be able to withstand operating pressures and other anticipated loadings\nwith unit stresses equivalent to those allowed for comparable material in pipe in the same location and kind of\nservice.\nThank you for your interest in this matter. If you have any further questions, please contact me.\nSincerely\nOriginal signed by:\nJoseph C.
