Box 672\nLeesville, LA 71446\nDear Ms. Edwards:\nA copy of your letter of January 2, 1974, to Mr. Rudy Langford, Director, Federal Housing\nAdministration, was directed to this Office.\nYou raised a question about cathodic protection requirements for aboveground piping. Though\nthere are no cathodic protection requirements for aboveground piping, the operator must comply\nwith appropriate portions of Sections 192.479 and 192.481 of Subpart I of the Federal standards\nto protect against atmospheric corrosion.\nIn connection with underground copper piping, the operator must comply with Sections 192.455\nand 192.457 a well as other pertinent sections. However, if in accordance with Section\n192.455(c) the operator can demonstrate by tests, investigation, or experience that bare copper\npipeline does not require corrosion control measures, then it is not required to provide them.\nIt is noted in your letter that the copper piping is under concrete foundations. Your attention is\ncalled to the requirement of Section 192.361(f) for the protection of service lines under buildings.\nThank you for you continued interest in pipeline safety.\nSincerely,\n\\signed\\\nJoseph C.
