Dear Ms. Edwards:
A copy of your letter of January 2, 1974, to Mr. Rudy Langford, Director, Federal Housing
Administration, was directed to this Office.
You raised a question about cathodic protection requirements for aboveground piping. Though
there are no cathodic protection requirements for aboveground piping, the operator must comply
with appropriate portions of Sections 192.479 and 192.481 of Subpart I of the Federal standards
to protect against atmospheric corrosion.
In connection with underground copper piping, the operator must comply with Sections 192.455
and 192.457 a well as other pertinent sections. However, if in accordance with Section
192.455(c) the operator can demonstrate by tests, investigation, or experience that bare copper
pipeline does not require corrosion control measures, then it is not required to provide them.
It is noted in your letter that the copper piping is under concrete foundations. Your attention is
called to the requirement of Section 192.361(f) for the protection of service lines under buildings.
Thank you for you continued interest in pipeline safety.
Sincerely,
\signed\
Joseph C. Caldwell
Director
Office of Pipeline Safety
