Dear Mr. Jacquot:
This responds to your letter of May 14, 1974, asking whether Subpart I of 49 CFR Part 192
applies to gathering systems in nonrural areas.
Subpart I applies to all pipelines subject to Part 192, including gathering lines in nonrural areas
as described in Section 192.1. Where certain requirements in Subpart I specifically relate to
transmission lines, these requirements apply with equal force to gathering lines as provided in
section 192.9.
We trust this satisfactorily answers your inquiry.
Sincerely,
/signed/
Joseph C. Caldwell
Director
Office of Pipeline Safety

RE: Corrosion control on gathering
systems in nonrural areas.
Dear Mr. Caldwell:
Having reviewed Subpart I of the Minimum Federal Safety Standards a question has been
raised as to whether the requirements for Subpart I are applicable to gathering systems in
nonrural areas. No mention is made in Subpart I of gathering systems and only transmission and
distribution systems are mentioned.
Your prompt reply to this inquiry is appreciated.
Very truly yours,
Jon F. Jacquot
