The Office of Pipeline Safety in\nthe Department of Transportation is responsible for the Federal safety regulation of gas pipelines.\nYou ask what regulations will go into effect in 1976 requiring gas companies to upgrade older\nlines. Corrosion control requirements under 49 CFR 192.457(b) become applicable August 1,\n1976. This rule is contained in the enclosed copy of the Federal gas pipeline safety regulations.\nAlso enclosed are copies of recent notices of proposed rule making issued in 1974 which would\nprovide new regulations for the gas industry.\nAs for the other areas of your concern, we suggest that you write the gas and oil industry directly,\nas it is the best source of information on recent activities.\nWe appreciate your interest in pipeline safety.\nSincerely,\nJoseph C.
