Cause detail: PIPELINE WAS EXCAVATED AS A RESULT OF AN INTERNAL IN-LINE INSPECTION THAT INDICATED AN ANOMALY AT THE ABOVE LOCATION. DURING EXCAVATION GAS LEAKAGE WAS DETECTED AND AFTER THE PIPE WAS EXPOSED A DETERMINATION THE LEAKAGE WAS FROM A CRACK A BUTT WELD. REPAIR WAS MADE BY REPLACING A 10 FEET OF PIPE IN THE AREA OF THE BUTT WELD. THE SECTION OF PIPE CONTAINING THE WELD HAD BEEN SENT FOR METALLURGICAL ANALYSIS AND WE ARE WAITING FOR COMPLETION OF ANALYSIS TO CLASSIFY CAUSE. 3-23-04 THE METALLURGICAL CONSULTANTS, INC ON THE GIRTH WELD CRACK/WELD FROM THE 30" MOBILE BAY INDEX 880 LINE INDICATES. "THE EXACT CAUSE OF THE CRACK WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE CRACK WAS LIKELY DUE TO EITHER HYDROGEN-INDUCED COLD CRACKING, OR SOME UNUSUAL CONDITION THAT OCCURRED DURING PIPELINE CONSTRUCTION. THE CRACK WAS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH A WELDING DEFECT, FATIGUE, INTERNAL OR EXTERNAL CORROSION OR ANY OBVIOUS METALLURGICAL DEFECIENCY"
