Cause detail: THE FAILURE OCCURRED BECAUSE OF IMPROPER COATING. THE PIPE WAS EXTERNALLY COATED EXCEPT FOR A BARE AREA 6" IN DIAMETER. THIS BARE AREA WAS EXPOSED TO EXTERNAL CONDITIONS WHICH, OVER TIME, REACTED WITH THE ALUMINUM. THE WALL THINNED, THEN EVENTUALLY FAILED.
