Hendrickson, Director Utility Safety Section State Of Indiana Public Service Comm. 901 State Office Building Indianapolis, Indiana 46204 Dear Mr. Hendrickson: Thank you for your letter of October 30, 1970, requesting an interpretation of 49 CFR, Section 192.199(g). You are correct that one method of compliance is to locate a regulator and pressure limiting device in separate vaults if below grade or separated by a reasonable distance if above grade. However, there may be other means of accomplishing this result which may be appropriate or desirable in a particular situation. The problem of a long control line on a monitor regulator is recognized but there are steps that can be taken to provide a protection for the control line; such as, locating the control line in the same ditch and slightly below the main line or using heavy wall pipe for the control line. If we can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to ask. Sincerely, /signed/ Joseph C. Caldwell Director, Acting Office of Pipeline Safety DB C:\WP51\INTERPRT\192\199\70-11-30 1#
