Hendrickson, Director Pipeline Safety Division Indiana Public Service Commission 901 State Office Building Indianapolis, Indiana 46204 Dear Mr. Hendrickson: This is in answer to our inquiry dated November 15,1971, where you ask us to advise you which of the referenced standards listed in Appendix A, Part 192, Apply to (1) the design of pipe threads and (2) malleable iron pipe fittings. In answer to your questions, first the design of pipe threads is covered by ASTM A-53”standard Specifications for Welded and Seamless Steel Pipe.” Secondly, there are no specifications for malleable iron pipe fittings listed in Part 192, just as there were none listed in B31.8. Malleable iron pipe fittings, therefore, would be under §192.143 General Requirements, that reads as follows: Each component of a pipeline must be able to withstand operating pressures and other anticipated loadings with unit stresses equivalent to those allowed for comparable material in pipe in the same location and kind of service. Thank you for your interest in this matter. If you have any further questions, please contact me. Sincerely Original signed by: Joseph C. Caldwell Acting Director Office of Pipeline Safety#
