Page 1Mr. C. E. Kleis Citizens Gas & Coke Utility 2020 N. Meridian Street Indianapolis, Indiana 46202 Dear Mr. Kleis: In reply to your letter of July 27, 1969, active corrosion is defined in Section 192.457(c) as corrosion which, unless controlled, could result in a condition that is detrimental to public safety. As covered by Section 192.457(b), the operator shall determine the areas of active corrosion by electrical survey, or where electrical survey is impracticable, by the study of corrosion and leak history records, by leak detection survey, or by other means. In the discretion of the individual gas operator, any type of electrical survey he may wish to use that will reveal active areas of corrosion is satisfactory. It is not the policy of the Office of Pipeline Safety to recommend any one electrical method over another. I trust this response will be helpful. Sincerely, /signed/ Joseph C. Caldwell Acting Director Office of Pipeline Safety DB C:\WP51\INTERPRT\192\457\71-08-09 1#
